There, visitors will be in awe of the sweeping blue agave fields that line the hills in the area. Way back in the 1500’s, native inhabitants in the region began to take the blue agave plant to create or ferment a drink. The main ingredient used to make tequila is the blue agave plant. Later, the Spanish arrived in the area and started to distill tequila. Next, natives tried to revolt against the Spanish people in 1541. However, Friar Juan Calero tried to keep everyone calm during this, but he was killed with rocks and arrows. Then, they took his body and hung it in the village, so everyone could see and be reminded of this tragic event that occurred. Across the world, tequila has become a favorite drink. Tequila, Jalisco was named a World Heritage Site due to the history that is behind the town. In 2003, this charming town was given the name of “Pueblo Magico”, which means magical town.
