There has been an increase in incidents of fraudsters scamming travelers in Mexican airports, and these scams, by and large, involve transportation links from the airport to resorts. These individuals will try to convince you that they represent the company you booked with in order to usher you into a car or bus. When you get to your destination they will present you with a bill, and you will realize that you have been picked up by a competitor or unauthorized company running a scam. At this point you will be out of pocket… and more than a little annoyed!

There are some things you can do to protect yourself from scammers, of course, and much of it is very simple.

Firstly, take note of the details of your reservation confirmation; have a hard copy of the confirmation email, but also have it on your phone or tablet. When a person approaches you take the time to match the details with what you have been issued. Check that they have identification, that they have something with them which bears the company logo, and that your name is on their reservation list. The first thing to do is make a note of all the details you can; the name of the driver and/or agent who tricked you, the name of the company you ended up going with, the vehicle registration (if you can get it), and the time at which you were picked up are all details to consider. Once you have done this you should pass the information along to the authorities and airport officials. They will investigate to ensure that no-one else is scammed by this company, and you may even get your money back!
